The word Maths cares most students owing to the widespread assumption in the society that the subject is way too difficult for students to crack. From our observation, this assumption has no basis of its own and has been spread by people who have not seen the interesting side of the subject. Below are some ways in which the anxiety could be tackled:
Tips for Tackling Timed Tests and Math Anxiety
1) Understand ‘What’ factor behind the issue
The present idea about math anxiety is regarding one person having difficulty to do math irrespective of their skill level. The major reason behind the issue of math anxiety is the fear and frustration that makes one individual stressed and overwhelmed about it. Various reasons could be attributed to this problem like-
- Comparison with fellow students.
- Absence of proper instruction.
- Past failures and challenging experiences in math.
- Learning disabilities like dyscalculia and weak learning skills etc.
2) Know the differences between real and unreal anxiety
While most people complain about their inability to do math, there are cases where it is could be due to the improper handling of math disabilities like-
- Inability to apply the learned concepts.
- Doing calculations in a weak manner.
- Having difficulty to learn basic facts and memorize them.
- Struggling to understand special and visual relationships.
Students should be assisted only if they have a disability in real, else they would simply complain that they have a disability and hence cannot perform the calculations despite not having the disability.
3) View math from an a positive perspective
There is nothing much needed to be said about this as if you have a negative outlook towards the subject it would be shown in your performance results. This mainly applies even if you are a teacher of the subject when you yourself do not know the certain concepts which challenge your thought process. Be patient while answering back to the difficult queries given by the students. It is absolutely fine if you are unable to answer them on spot and reply them that you would get back to them the next day or so.
4) Manage the tutoring aspects under your control well
The way most teachers teach would rarely have an impact on students who have little interest in the subject and this call for tutors to be mindful of conveying the topics in the subjects like the ones mentioned in NCERT Textbooks which students could relate to in their daily lives. For instance almost all of them travel, shop and bank from different places as the math concepts are used literally everywhere in these activities.
From the above discussion, it could be stated beyond doubt that learning math is not a boring activity provided proper mentoring and guidance are provided to the students. For more ideas about how to learn maths in the ideal manner and much more, Subscribe to the Byju’sYoutube Channel:
